I used ChatGPT for months. For captions, emails, blog outlines, client proposals. It was genuinely helpful. Then I switched to Claude Code for my marketing work, and I realized how much time I had been wasting without knowing it.

This is not a “ChatGPT is bad” post. It is not. I still use it for certain things. But if you do marketing for clients or run your own brand, the difference between the two tools is real and worth understanding.

Here is what I found after months of using both.

The Context Problem: Why ChatGPT Felt Like Starting Over Every Time

Here is what my ChatGPT workflow looked like for the first few months.

Every Monday morning I would open a new chat and type something like: “You are a marketing assistant for The Igniting Studio. We are a marketing agency that uses AI tools. Our tone is warm, direct, no fluff. We never use em dashes. Our clients are…”

Then I would paste in brand guidelines. Client names. Tone rules. Platform preferences. Every. Single. Time.

By Wednesday I had a new chat open for a different task, and I would do it all over again. Or worse, I would skip the briefing because I was in a rush, and the output would sound like generic marketing copy that could have been written for anyone.

ChatGPT does not remember you between sessions. It starts fresh every time. For a quick “write me a subject line” that is fine. For running an actual business with multiple clients, brand guidelines, and recurring workflows, it becomes a real problem.

You end up being the memory. You are the one holding all the context, re-pasting it, re-explaining it. The AI is smart, but it does not know you.

What CLAUDE.md Changes: Your AI Actually Knows Your Business

This is the single biggest difference between the two tools and the reason I switched.

Claude Code uses a file called CLAUDE.md that lives in your project folder. It loads automatically every time you start a session. Inside that file, you put everything your AI needs to know about your business: brand voice rules, client details, content guidelines, pricing, what words to avoid, how you like things formatted.

When I open Claude Code on Monday morning, it already knows:

I do not paste anything. I do not re-explain anything. I just start working.

The output is consistent from day one of the week to day five. From one client to the next. That consistency used to take me 15 to 20 minutes of setup per session with ChatGPT. Over a month, that adds up to hours.

And it gets better over time. Every time I correct something or add a new rule, I update the CLAUDE.md file once, and it sticks. Forever. The AI learns your business the way a good assistant would, except it never forgets.

Where ChatGPT Still Wins (Being Honest)

I am not going to pretend Claude Code is better at everything. That would not be true.

Quick questions and casual use. If I need a quick answer to something random, ChatGPT in the browser is faster. Open a tab, type, get an answer. Claude Code is a terminal-based tool. It is not designed for throwaway questions.

Image generation. ChatGPT has DALL-E built in. If I need a quick visual concept or a rough thumbnail idea, ChatGPT handles that. Claude Code does not generate images.

Lower learning curve. ChatGPT is a chat window. Anyone can use it in five minutes. Claude Code runs in a terminal and works with your local files. It takes some setup. If you are not comfortable with that, ChatGPT is more approachable.

Browsing and research. ChatGPT can browse the web in real time. For quick research or checking current trends, it is convenient.

These are real strengths. If you only need AI for occasional quick tasks, ChatGPT is perfectly fine and probably the better choice.

Where Claude Code Wins for Real Marketing Work

This is where things get interesting if you do marketing professionally.

Consistency across sessions and clients. Because Claude Code reads your CLAUDE.md every session, the output stays consistent. Same voice, same rules, same formatting. You do not drift. Your clients do not get different-sounding content depending on what day you wrote it.

Working with your actual files. Claude Code reads and edits files on your computer. It can open your content calendar, update a client brief, write a blog post directly into your project folder, or edit an existing draft. You are not copying and pasting between a chat window and your documents.

Building repeatable systems. This is the big one. With Claude Code, I have built workflows that I reuse every week: proposal templates that pull in the right client details automatically, content briefs that follow my exact format, caption frameworks that match each client’s voice. These are not one-off chats. They are systems that run the same way every time.

Speed for recurring work. Once your CLAUDE.md is set up and your workflows are built, the actual work goes fast. A full set of weekly social captions that used to take me an hour now takes 15 minutes. Not because the AI is smarter, but because it already has all the context it needs.

Longer, more complex tasks. Claude Code handles longer outputs and multi-step tasks better in my experience. Writing a full blog post, building out a content plan for the month, creating a detailed proposal. It stays focused and does not lose the thread halfway through.

What About Claude.ai vs Claude Code?

This confuses a lot of people, so let me clarify.

Claude.ai is the browser-based chat. It is Anthropic’s version of ChatGPT, basically. You go to claude.ai, type a message, get a response. It is great for quick tasks: brainstorming, rewriting a paragraph, answering a question. It does not have the CLAUDE.md system or file access.

Claude Code is the developer tool. It runs in your terminal, reads your local files, and uses CLAUDE.md for persistent context. This is what I use for my actual marketing work.

If you are coming from ChatGPT and want to try Anthropic’s AI, start with Claude.ai. It will feel familiar. If you want the persistent context and file-based workflow, that is Claude Code.

There is also Claude Cowork, which is Anthropic’s new enterprise agent. It is designed for larger teams and more complex automation. For solopreneurs and small agencies, it is not the right fit yet. Keep an eye on it, but do not worry about it for now.

Who Should Use What: A Simple Decision Guide

There is no rule that says you have to pick one. I use Claude Code for 90% of my marketing work and still open ChatGPT when I need a quick image or a throwaway answer.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Claude Code free to use?

Claude Code has a free tier with usage limits. For professional marketing work, you will likely want a paid plan. ChatGPT also has free and paid tiers. Both are worth paying for if you use them daily.

Can Claude Code generate images like ChatGPT?

No. Claude Code does not have built-in image generation. If you need AI-generated visuals, ChatGPT with DALL-E or a dedicated tool like Midjourney is the better choice.

Do I need to be a developer to use Claude Code?

Not exactly, but it helps to be comfortable with a terminal. Claude Code is a developer-focused tool. It is not as plug-and-play as ChatGPT. That said, you do not need to write code to use it for marketing. The learning curve is real but manageable.

What is CLAUDE.md and how does it work?

CLAUDE.md is a markdown file that lives in your project folder. Claude Code reads it automatically at the start of every session. You write your business context, brand rules, client details, and preferences inside it. Think of it as a permanent brief that your AI always has open.

Can I use Claude Code for social media management?

Claude Code is excellent for creating social media content: captions, content plans, post ideas, hashtag research. It does not post to social media directly or schedule posts. You still need a scheduling tool for that. But the content creation side is where it really shines, especially with CLAUDE.md keeping your voice consistent.

The Bottom Line

ChatGPT is a great tool. I used it for months and it helped me get things done. But once I set up Claude Code with my CLAUDE.md file, the difference was clear. Less time re-explaining, more time working. Better consistency. Faster output for the tasks that actually matter.

If you are a marketer, freelancer, or agency owner who uses AI every day, it is worth trying Claude Code for a week. Set up your CLAUDE.md, run your normal workflow through it, and see if the difference is as noticeable for you as it was for me.

I write about how I use Claude Code for real marketing work every week. If you want to see the workflows in action, check out The Igniting Studio or follow along on social.
