The biggest obstacle between marketers and Claude Code is not the tool. It is the assumption that you need a technical background to use it. You do not.

What the terminal actually is

Claude Code runs in the terminal. It is a window where you type commands and read text output. If you have ever used a chatbot or a search box, you already understand 90 percent of how this works. The commands you use for marketing work are not complex. The most common ones are calling a skill, reading a file, and saving output.

The setup that takes one hour

Installing Claude Code means downloading the application and running the installer. After installation, you create a project folder. Inside that folder, you create the CLAUDE.md file. This is a plain text document that holds your brand briefing: your voice rules, your audience description, your content pillars, your tone guidelines. You are not writing code. You are writing sentences about your brand. That is the setup. One folder, one document.

Writing your first skill

A skill is a plain text file. It starts with a title, a short description, and then a set of instructions written in plain English. For example: Read the transcript provided. Identify the single most important insight. Write a caption that opens a different door into that insight without repeating what the video says. Follow the voice rules in CLAUDE.md. Produce three options, each under 200 words. Add five lowercase hashtags at the end of each option. That is a skill. Written in plain sentences. No code.

The three skills to build first

A caption generator for your video content. A hashtag research skill that generates relevant sets and checks current activity level. A weekly planning skill that takes a brief of what you worked on this week and generates content ideas organised by your pillars and platform mix.

What to do when the output is not quite right

Add the correction to the skill file as an example. If the caption was too long, note the ideal length with a before and after example. If the tone was off, add a note describing what off means for your brand. The skill improves with use because you are teaching it your specific standards, not just applying general AI content guidelines.

The realistic time to competence

Most marketers spend one to two hours on the initial configuration. By the end of the first week, they have a working caption skill and are seeing real time savings. By the end of the first month, they typically have three to five skills running and have recovered eight to ten hours of execution time per week.
