Every few weeks, a new AI tool launches with the promise that it will handle your marketing. You subscribe, you set it up, and six weeks later you are staring at generic output that sounds nothing like your brand and wondering why you are paying for it.

The problem is not the AI. The problem is the model. A one-size-fits-all marketing tool cannot know your brand the way your own system can. Here is how to build an AI marketing system that actually fits a small business, without a developer, without a large budget, and without giving up creative control.

What a real AI marketing system looks like

A real AI marketing system for a small business has three components. A place where the brand context lives. A set of repeatable workflows for specific tasks. And a way to run those workflows without starting from scratch every time.

In Claude Code, the brand context lives in a file called CLAUDE.md. The workflows live in skill files. The way to run them is a simple command in the terminal. No dashboard, no subscription on top of your subscription.

Starting with the brand document

The most important thing you will build is the brand document. It should include your voice rules, your content pillars, your audience description, and your output rules. Write this document once. Update it when something changes. From that point on, every skill you run reads this document first.

The four skills every small business needs

A caption skill that takes a video transcript or talking points and produces finished captions in your voice. A competitor research skill that pulls recent posts from competitors on two or three platforms. An email sequence skill that takes a product or offer and builds a nurture sequence with subject lines, preview text, and body copy. A weekly planning skill that reviews your content calendar and generates topic suggestions based on your pillars and what is currently trending.

What this system costs to run

Claude Pro is 0 a month. Claude Code is included. A small business running four or five skills per week will spend 0 to 0 per month total. Compare that to a social media management tool, a copywriting tool, and a scheduling tool separately. The Claude Code system does what all three do, in your actual brand voice, for less.

The one thing you have to do yourself

You have to review the output before publishing. The system handles the execution. The judgment about whether a piece of content is right for this week, this moment, this audience, that stays with you. That is the correct division of labor.
